No more cold’s this Autumn and Winter
Many Ayurvedic treatment modalities are aimed to strengthen and support bodys natural ability to resist any harmful influence. Nasal Therapy – Nasya is mainly performed as a part of daily routine to strengthen nasal cavity and protect the whole organism from any unwanted pathogens that can be present in the inhaled air.
One of the five main cleansing procedures, Panchakarmas mentioned in Ayurveda, Nasya therapy is a process wherein the medicated oil is administered through the nostrils. Since nose is the gateway of the head, the therapy is highly effective in preventing as well as helping to cure a number of diseases pertaining to the head. The therapy cleanses and opens the channels of the head, directly influencing the functioning of brain. Nasya is beneficial if done on a regular basis, as it keeps the eyes, nose, ears and entire head healthy. Moreover, early aging of the body and graying of the hair is effectively prevented by the regular administration of Nasya karma.
There are many types of Nasya depending on the condition, dosha predominance, drugs used and so on.
Cleansing nasya: In this type of Nasya dry powders (rather than oils) are blown into the nose with the help of a tube. It is mainly used to treat kapha types of diseases such as headaches, heaviness in the head, cold, nasal congestion, sticky eyes and hoarseness of voice due to sticky kapha. This slimy dosha generally is the main cause of sinusitis which can be greatly helped by the means of cleansing nasya. Powder of brahmi is traditionally used in this therapy.
Nourishing nasya: Ghee, herbal oils and medicated milk are commonly used to cure vata disorders. Studies suggest that it is beneficial to cure vata-type headaches, migraine headache, dryness of voice, dry nose, nervousness, anxiety, fear, dizziness and emptiness. Negative thoughts can be banished by undergoing this treatment.
Daily oil nasya: This type of therapy is administered by dipping the clean little finger in ghee or oil and inserting into each nostril. This lubricates the nasal passage and gives a gentle massage. Doing this type of Nasya on a regular basis can release stress and improve bodys immunity to a great extent.
Nasya is excellent to perform as a preventative procedure in the change of seasons to cold and warm. Hence, Monsoon and spring are excellent times when to take a course of Nasya treatment to cleanse and nourish our upper airways.
We look forward hearing form you about how you have started to support your Nose this Autumn!
